Stamattina siamo usciti molto presto, era ancora notte fonda. Il mio umano camminava veloce. Aveva fretta. Di solito si muove con calma, ma non oggi. L’odore che portava addosso era diverso. Era pungente, come ferro. Era un odore che conoscevo, ma non mi piaceva.
Mi ha messo la corda. Non lo fa quasi mai. So stare al suo passo. L’ho imparato. Quando lo faccio bene, lui sorride appena, e quello basta. Ma oggi non c’era tempo per sorridere. “Muoviti, vecchio mio. Oggi è il gran giorno.” La sua voce era tesa, ma ferma. Non so cosa voglia dire “gran giorno”. So solo che era diverso dagli altri giorni.
Poi è venuto un altro. Siamo andati nelle camerate. I motori erano già accesi, lontani. Il loro rumore mi riempiva le orecchie. Una volta mi spaventavano, ma ho imparato. Quei rumori vogliono dire che se ne stanno andando. Quando si allontanano, il silenzio torna, e io posso aspettare.
Aspetto sempre. È quello che faccio. Quando tornano, lo sento. Il rombo cambia, diventa familiare. E il suo è diverso da tutti. È più basso, più lento. Quando lo sento, mi siedo e aspetto. Lui entra, si accuccia vicino a me e mi carezza la testa. A volte ha gli occhi bagnati. Io gli lecco la faccia. Non so perché lo faccio, ma so che gli fa bene.
Oggi, però, c’è quell’odore. Non mi piace, ma non mi allontano. È il mio posto, accanto a lui. Lui mi guarda. “Stasera torno, vecchio mio,” dice. Io non capisco tutte le parole. Ma so cosa vuol dire.
E così aspetto. Aspetto di sentire il rombo che mi dirà che è tornato.
Aspetto il suono che mi dice che è vivo.

This morning we left very early, it was still late at night. My human was walking fast. He was in a hurry. Usually he moves calmly, but not today. The smell he carried on him was different. It was pungent, like iron. It was a smell I knew, but I didn’t like it.
He put me on a rope. He almost never does that. I can keep up with him. I’ve learned it. When I do it well, he just smiles, and that’s enough. But today there was no time to smile. “Hurry up, old man. Today is the big day.” His voice was tense, but firm. I don’t know what “big day” means. I just know it was different from other days.
Then someone else came. We went to the barracks. The engines were already on, far away. Their noise filled my ears. They used to scare me, but I’ve learned. Those noises mean they’re leaving. When they go away, silence returns, and I can wait.
I always wait. That’s what I do. When they come back, I hear it. The rumble changes, becomes familiar. And his is different from all the others. It is lower, slower. When I hear it, I sit and wait. He comes in, crouches next to me and caresses my head. Sometimes his eyes are wet. I lick his face. I don’t know why I do it, but I know it does him good.
Today, however, there is that smell. I don’t like it, but I don’t move away. It’s my place, next to him. He looks at me. “I’ll be back tonight, old man,” he says. I don’t understand all the words. But I know what he means.
And so I wait. I wait to hear the rumble that will tell me he’s back. I wait for the sound that tells me he’s alive.
