Sebbene contemporaneo al tedesco Messerschmitt Me 262, primo caccia a reazione della Luftwaffe, i due velivoli non si scontrarono mai direttamente in combattimento. Con una velocità massima superiore agli 800 km/h, il Meteor fu comunque impiegato con successo contro le bombe volanti V-1. Nel dopoguerra il Meteor continuò la sua carriera, venendo adottato anche dalla rinata Aeronautica Militare italiana, dove contribuì alla transizione verso l’era dei jet.

The Gloster Meteor, Britain’s first jet fighter, was powered by revolutionary jet engines developed by Frank Whittle, ( WATCH THE INTERVIEW WITH FRANK WITTLE HERE) the father of Allied jet propulsion in World War II. Although contemporary with the German Messerschmitt Me 262, the Luftwaffe’s first jet fighter, the two aircraft never met in direct combat. With a top speed of over 800 km/h, the Meteor was nevertheless used successfully against V-1 flying bombs. After the war, the Meteor continued its career, also being adopted by the reborn Italian Air Force, where it contributed to the transition to the jet age.
