Agello, Canaveri, Dal Molin
“What is courage?” he asked him one morning, after that for days not even their looks had crossed.
He looked up from some papers he was filling out and leaned on the back of the chair that creaked a little, like the courage of that Tenentino ( as per “little officer” ) who had thrown in the towel the last week.
He stood, observing at that young guy.
He wanted to tell him that the courage was to look up into the sky during an open cockpit flight in a cold starry night and accept that his gaze was contemplating the infinity, we, infinitesimal and fragile flying dot that becomes smaller and smaller as the vastness of that universe is by us perceived. And while understanding, to grasp that wonderful truth that dwells in our hearts that reassures us and tells us that something in that infinite majesty, in a way and a reason that perhaps we will never understand, we also count.
He would have liked to have enclosed in his hand the courage that dwelt in the heart of the man who first climbed a mountain and showed it to him.
But he wouldn’t have understood, that simple 20-year-old boy needed simple words.
He got up, walked around the desk and in two steps he was in front of him; he put a hand on his shoulder and felt that he was trembling. Angry, he thought.
“Courage is to be part of a greater whole, to renounce ourselves to become part of a group”.
The looks had returned to seek and recognize each other.
The tremor was diminishing, the firm grip of Colonel Bernasconi was the rock on which the young eagle could always rest.
“Courage, dear Dal Molin, is sacrifice” the tremor ceased completely but the shoulder remained firm under the grip ” but it is also reward. We know the sacrifice, we’ll find the reward when the time will come”.
The 3rd ( or perhaps 13th? ) January 1902 was born Tomaso Dal Molin, a pilot who expressed in full and until the tragic end met by testing an experimental prototype built for the Schneider Trophy Cup, that sense of personal annihilation in favor of the team and that spirit of sacrifice that was demanded of the pilots of the Reparto Alta Velocità, the Regia Aeronautica High Speed Squadron.
