L’IDROSCALO DI DESENZANO – SEDE DEL REPARTO ALTA VELOCITA’

Percorrendo la strada che da Desenzano Del Garda va verso Verona si passa davanti al maestoso cancello di quella che fu la base operativa del Reparto Alta Velocità, meglio conosciuto come RAV.
Oltre il cancello affiancato ai due lati lati da maestose Aquile Regie, si può ancora scorgere parte della struttura e più oltre, lasciando correre lo sguardo attraverso lo spiazzo tra hangar e la palazzina, si immagina nel riflesso del lago il punto esatto dove ancora resiste lo scivolo sul quale venivano calati in acqua gli idrocorsa.
E’ sopravvissuta anche la bella Villa che ospitava i Piloti e che tante volte, grazie agli scalini posti all’ingresso, fornì l’ideale location per le foto ricordo che sono giunte fino ai nostri giorni.
Appena oltrepassato il cancello, collocato sulla destra e sotto al pennone, teoricamente all’ombra di un tricolore che da tanti anni non sventola più, è stato posato un monumento celebrativo degli uomini del RAV e dell’idrocorsa che con il tempo divenne il simbolo meccanico del RAV: il Macchi MC72, il magnifico progetto dell’ingegner Mario Castoldi. Un monumento massiccio che nella sua composizione razionale fa sospettare un pragmatico contributo al progetto da parte di qualche appartenente alla AAA Associazione Arma Aeronautica sez. di  Desenzano D/Garda che pose in sede l’opera nell’anno 1994.
Soddisfatto l’occhio dell’appassionato con la rappresentazione del mondo sovrastato da una grande V rossa e da un ben realizzato profilo del Macchi MC72, sulle superfici rivolte al visitatore sono iscritti con precisione da furiere i nomi e le date e si è trovato anche lo spazio per porre in evidenza un bel pensiero dell’illustre vicino di casa, il Vate Gabriele D’Annunzio che, si sa, fu egli stesso un aviatore. Scrive d’Annunzio:

“Volarono più in alto, più oltre, lungo la doppia via stellare della Gloria e del Sacrificio.”

D’Annunzio fu un vero mentore per il RAV avendo egli ceduto questo luogo che era il suo personale idroscalo affinché la Regia Aeronautica lo eleggesse a nido delle aquile dalla V rossa.
Nonostante non sia un capolavoro artistico, magari più modesto e sicuramente meno pretenzioso della suggestiva opera d’arte “ispirata alla velocità che sorge dal lago” e posta in piazza centrale a Desenzano, il solido tributo della AAA è nella sua semplicità sicuramente un racconto più comprensibile e preciso di chi furono i Velocisti e di che cosa nel 1934, furono in grado di fare gli uomini di questo reparto d’élite della Regia Aeronautica.

L’idroscalo di Desenzano del Garda è realmente un vero e proprio tesoro di Storia Nazionale e Santuario per gli appassionati di Aviazione. Molte sono state le iniziative e le associazioni che nel tempo in un modo o nell’altro sono comunque riuscite a mantenere integro, come in una capsula del tempo, questo luogo che ancora oggi a distanza di tanti anni ancora tanta emozione riesce a trasmettere.

UN MONUMENTO DA INDOSSARE

Scriveva il Prof. Franco Panzini, docente alla Facoltà di Architettura in Ascoli Piceno:

“…nel momento della sua designazione a monumento, l’oggetto trascende la sua funzione originaria ed assume un valore di testimonianza il cui messaggio si trasmette nel tempo. Questo processo di riconoscimento e di assegnazione di una particolare qualità monumentale produce una trasformazione profonda dell’oggetto: il monumento nasce come manufatto che ha in origine caratteristiche analoghe a quelle di tutti gli artefatti umani, ma tende ad una dimensione svincolata che trascende e valica i limiti della funzione…”
Volevamo quindi anche noi creare un nostro monumento al RAV, un tributo però che non fosse fine a se stesso e che soprattutto non rischiasse di finire dimenticato in un ombroso giardinetto o peggio ancora divelto da una ruspa. Volevamo qualcosa che potesse essere visto, mostrato e raccontato. E lo abbiamo fatto. Abbiamo creato un capo di abbigliamento che allo stesso tempo “nasce come (capo di abbigliamento) che ha in origine caratteristiche analoghe a quelle di tutti (i capi di abbigliamento) ma tende ad una dimensione svincolata che trascende e valica i limiti della funzione”.
Il suo compito è semplicissimo: fornire il pretesto a chi la indossa di raccontare una delle più belle storie dell’aviazione italiana. Serviva quindi un prodotto il più semplice, utile ed accessibile possibile, così da renderlo al massimo fruibile ed avvicinabile. Cosa di meglio quindi di una semplice maglia, il capo versatile per eccellenza sul quale imprimere un messaggio il più semplice possibile accompagnandolo con un simbolo il più chiaro possibile. Ecco allora tornar buono l’esempio del furiere che pose in essere quel pragmatico monumento: una scritta semplice, realizzata nei caratteri propri dell’epoca, un aeroplano simbolo di quell’epoca. E dentro al nostro monumento noi ci avremmo infilato direttamente il custode, colui che, indossandolo, avrebbe raccontato. Probabilmente è la prima volta nella storia che una Guida indossa direttamente il suo Museo.

DEDICATA AI MOTORISTI

Rimaneva da trovare un nome. A chi dedicare il prodotto? Per una volta abbiamo deciso di lasciare i Piloti in seconda fila, di rappresentate almeno noi “gli specialisti”, i motoristi che tanto ebbero a dannarsi sui motori che si rompevano e che come ebbe a dire l’ingegner Castoldi “invece che cavalli davano somari”. Ai Motoristi della RAV, fantasmi dai volti sfocati che appaiono così raramente nelle fotografie, a Loro, che come sempre dopo un momento di ribalta torneranno nell’oblio del loro lavoro, noi dedichiamo il nostro monumento da indossare.

THE DESENZANO HYDROSCALO – HEADQUARTERS OF THE HIGH SPEED DEPARTMENT

Along the road that goes from Desenzano Del Garda ( on Garda Lake ) to Verona, you pass in front of the majestic gate of the 30’s operational base of the Reparto Alta Velocità (High Speed Department), better known as RAV.
Beyond the gate, flanked on both sides by majestic royal eagles, you can still see several intact part of the original structure and beyond, letting your gaze run through the open space between the hangar and the building, you can imagine in the reflection of the lake the exact point where the hydro racers were lowered into the water.
The beautiful Villa that housed the “velocisti” pilots has also luckily survived and which many times, thanks to the steps at the entrance, provided the ideal location for the souvenir photos that have come down to our days.
Behind the gate, located on the right side, under the flagpole, theoretically in the shadow of a tricolor that hasn’t waved for many years, is a commemorative memorial of the RAV men and the hydrocorsa that over time became the mechanical symbol of the RAV: the Macchi MC72, the magnificent project by engineer Castoldi. It is a massive monument that in its rational composition suggests a pragmatic contribution to the project by some engineer belonging to the AAA Association of Arma Aeronautica section of Desenzano D / Garda who placed the work in place in the year 1994.
The enthisiast eye is well satisfied with the representation of the world surmounted by a large red V and a well-made profile of the Macchi. Names and dates are inscribed with precision by quartermaster on the surfaces facing the visitor. Well highlighted is a beautiful thought of an illustrious neighbor, the poet soldier Gabriele D’Annunzio who was itself a aviator. D’Annunzio wrote:

“They flew higher, farther, along the stellar double path of Glory and Sacrifice.”

D’Annunzio was a strong mentor of the Reparto Alta Velocità, he donated to the Regia Aeronautica this place that was his personal seaplane’s dock indeed, to elect it as nest of the red V eagles.
It is not an artistic masterpiece, more modest and certainly less pretentious than the suggestive work of art “inspired by the speed that rises from the lake” and placed in the central square in Desenzano, the tribute of the AAA is certainly a more understandable and precise story in its simplicity who were the “Velocisti” and what in 1934, the men of this elite unit of the Regia Aeronautica were able to do.

The Desenzano del Garda seaplane base is really a real treasure of national history and a sanctuary for aviation enthusiasts. There have been many initiatives and associations that in one way or another have managed to keep intact, as in a time capsule, this place that still today, after so many years, still manages to transmit so much emotion.

A MEMORIAL TO WEAR

Prof. Franco Panzini, lecturer at the Ascoli Piceno Architecture University wrote:
“… in the moment of its designation as a monument, the object transcends its original function and takes on a value of testimony whose message is transmitted over time. This process of recognition and assignment of a particular monumental quality produces a profound transformation of the object: the monument was born as an artifact that originally has characteristics similar to those of all human artifacts, but tends to a new dimension that transcends and goes beyond the limits of function … “
So we also wanted to create our own monument to the RAV, a tribute, however, that should not been an useless thing and that above all did not risk ending up forgotten in a shady garden or worse still torn up by a bulldozer. We wanted something that could be seen, shown and overall told. And we did it. We created a garment that at the same time “was born as (a garment) that originally has characteristics similar to those of all (garments) but tends to a free dimension that transcends and goes beyond the limits of function”.
Its task is very simple indeed: to provide the wearer with an excuse to tell one of the most beautiful stories of Italian aviation. We therefore needed a product as simple, useful and accessible as possible, so as to make it as usable and approachable as possible. So what better than a classic roundneck sweater, the versatile garment par excellence on which to engrave a message as simple as possible, accompanying it with a symbol as clear as possible? Here then is the good example of style of that quartermaster who set up that pragmatic monument at Desenzano Idroscalo: a simple writing, made in the characters of the time, and the hydro racer, symbol of that era. And inside our monument we would have slipped directly the guide, the one who, wearing it, would have told the story. It’s probably the very first time in the history that a guide directly wears his museum.

DEDICATED TO MOTORISTS

A name remained to be found. Who would we have dedicated the sweater to? For this time we decided to leave the pilots in the background and give the scene to “the specialists”, the men who had so much to damn themselves on the engines that broke and who, as chief engineer Castoldi one time said: “instead of horses they gave donkeys “. To the RAV “Motorista” so, ghost with blurred face that appear so rarely in photographs, to him, who as always after a moment of limelight will return to oblivion of his work, we dedicate our monument to wear.
