Io c’ero quel giorno.
Era il 1962 e io un giovane allievo sulla AMERIGO VESPUCCI che si sbracciava insieme ai compagni per salutare la USS INDEPENDENCE, il gigante d’acciaio. In quell’attimo del presente il passato ed il futuro del mare incrociavano la loro rotta, ed il futuro si inchinava alla storia: ”Siete la nave più bella del mondo”.
Gli anni passano in un soffio. E sul mare il vento ed il sale li consumano ancora più velocemente. Sessant’anni son volati, la INDEPENDENCE è andata in disarmo, ma la VESPUCCI naviga ancora. Il passato ha superato il futuro che però non si arrende e la danza si ripete. E’ la volta di una classe NIMITZ, la USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH, un nuovo gigante dei mari, ancora più possente. Eppure anche il nuovo campione si inchina alla storia: “Siete sempre voi la nave più bella del mondo.”

Sono trascorsi due giorni dal 93mo anno di navigazione della Vespucci. Nulla sembra fermarla. L’acqua salata del mare è per questa nave la fonte salvifica di una eterna giovinezza. Arriverà il traguardo del secolo ininterrotto sul mare e sarà ancora la VESPUCCI la regina incontrastata dei mari.
Io c’ero quel giorno e ancora ci sono.
Ora il mio compito è quello di proteggere chi impara l’onore di servire il proprio paese. Forse siamo solo degli spiriti che non vogliono abbandonare la nave più bella dell’universo, ma rinunciamo alle stelle pur di poter ancora ascoltare il canto del mare.
I was there that day.
It was 1962, and I was a young cadet on the AMERIGO VESPUCCI, waving along with my mates to greet the USS INDEPENDENCE, the steel giant. In that moment, the past and the future of the sea crossed their paths, and the future bowed to history: “You are the most beautiful ship in the world.”
The years pass in a blink. And on the sea, the wind and the salt wear them away even faster. Sixty years have flown by, the INDEPENDENCE has been decommissioned, but the VESPUCCI still sails. The past has overtaken the future, which, however, does not give up, and the dance repeats. It’s the turn of a NIMITZ class, the USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH, a new sea giant, even more powerful. Yet, even the new champion bows to history: “You are still the most beautiful ship in the world.”

Two days have passed since the Vespucci’s 93rd year of navigation. Nothing seems to stop her. The salty water of the sea is for this ship the salvific source of eternal youth. It will reach the milestone of a century uninterrupted at sea and will still be the VESPUCCI, the undisputed queen of the seas.
I was there that day and I am still here.
Now, my task is to protect those who learn the honor of serving their country. Maybe we are only ghost, spirits who do not want to leave the most beautiful ship in the universe, but we give up the stars just to be left to listen to the song of the sea again.
